Tinubu departs Brazil after BRICS summit
President Bola Tinubu has left Rio de Janeiro following his participation in the 2025 BRICS Summit hosted by the Government of Brazil.
The Presidential aircraft, Nigeria Air Force 001, took off from the Galeão Air Force Base at approximately 1:00 pm, local time.
President Tinubu, who attended the summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, addressed world leaders on the opening day of the high-level meeting of heads of state and government from emerging economies.
In his address, the President stressed the urgent need to reform global governance frameworks, particularly in finance and healthcare, to foster greater equity and inclusion for low-income and developing nations, especially across the African continent.
Nigeria’s presence at the summit follows its formal recognition in January 2025 as one of the nine BRICS partner-countries, alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
President Tinubu had earlier departed Nigeria on June 28 for Saint Lucia, where he formalised diplomatic ties with the Caribbean island-nation and engaged with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) on broader multilateral cooperation.
