We’ll enact legislation for women in politics – Speaker Dr. Tajudeen Abbas
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, has reiterated the commitment of the 10th National Assembly to implementing robust legislative measures aimed at protecting and empowering women in politics.
Speaking at the Nigerian Women Leadership and Empowerment Conference 2025 in Abuja, themed “Investing in Nigerian Women, Securing Our Future,” Dr. Abbas emphasized the importance of gender-inclusive governance and policies designed to ensure equal representation of women in both political and economic arenas.
Dr. Abbas acknowledged that despite constitutional guarantees of gender equality, Nigerian women continue to face discrimination, underrepresentation, and socio-economic challenges that limit their full participation in leadership roles.
The Speaker highlighted that the House of Representatives has introduced a Legislative Agenda that prioritizes women’s political participation and economic empowerment. He also pointed out that all female lawmakers in the House have been included in the Constitution Amendment Committee to promote gender-sensitive policymaking.
In her opening remarks, the Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Kafilat Ogbara, described the Nigerian Women Leadership and Empowerment Conference 2025 as more than just an event but a movement dedicated to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for future generations of women.
Mrs. Ogbara added that the conference serves as a platform to celebrate the strength, resilience, and potential of Nigerian women while fostering an environment in which they can thrive, lead, and inspire.
A key highlight of the conference was the launch of the National Compendium of Women in Leadership Positions, a publication that celebrates the achievements of women who have overcome barriers and made significant contributions across various sectors.
