The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) targets global standards with reforms to enhance engagement

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is doubling efforts to transform Nigerian football into a globally competitive and commercially viable industry.

This commitment was reaffirmed when the team paid a courtesy visit to the Director General, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Dr. Mohammed Bulama, in Abuja.

NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye, disclosed ongoing discussions with global firms, including IMG, aimed at attracting substantial investments.

Elegbeleye who highlighted Nigeria’s massive population and football enthusiasm as key selling points for investors, said companies like Coca-Cola and NNPC have shown confidence in the league’s transparency and credibility.

Grassroots and Radio’s Vital Role

Elegbeleye stressed the importance of radio in expanding the league’s visibility, especially in rural areas. “Television alone cannot connect with grassroots communities. Radio, particularly in local languages, is critical to engaging remote regions and fostering inclusivity.”.

Strategic Goals for Growth

Speaking further, Elegbeleye underscored the need to emulate global leagues while leveraging Nigeria’s unique strengths, such as its cultural diversity and youth talent, to establish a sustainable business model for football.

Support from FRCN

FRCN Director-General, Dr. Mohammed Bulama, pledged unwavering support for the league. “Football is more than a business; it’s a unifying force for Nigerians. At Radio Nigeria, we are committed to promoting the NPFL and reigniting the passion for radio sports commentary,” Dr. Bulama said.

Transparency and Accountability

Nelson Ine, Executive Director of GTI Asset Management and Trust Limited, outlined the NPFL’s transparency initiatives, which include managing funds under capital market financial discipline and producing audited accounts each season.

He emphasized the need for private ownership of sports leagues, citing the success of global models like the English Premier League and La Liga.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to fostering collaboration between FRCN and the NPFL board to position the league as a leading sports brand in Africa.
