South Africans’ support for me not intended to spite Adetshina, says Miss Kwara

Ufa Dania, the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 contestant, has refuted claims that South Africans supported her to spite Chidimma Adetshina.

Dania, who represented Kwara and was the first plus-size contestant in the competition history, appeared to have received overwhelming encouragement from South Africans during the pageant.

Despite the support for Dania, Chidimma Adetshina, who was enmeshed in a controversy over her eligibility to participate in this year’s Miss South Africa, took home the Miss Universe Nigeria crown.

In an interview with Channels TV, Dania attributed the backing from South Africans to her relatability and shared characteristics.

Context of the Statement

The statement made by Miss Kwara regarding South Africans’ support appears to be a response to a situation where her popularity or backing from South Africans might have been misconstrued as an act of spite towards another individual, Adetshina. This context suggests that there may have been a competitive or contentious relationship between Miss Kwara and Adetshina, possibly in the realm of pageantry or public representation.

Understanding Support Dynamics

Support from one group (in this case, South Africans) for an individual (Miss Kwara) can stem from various factors such as shared cultural values, admiration for personal achievements, or alignment with public sentiments. It is crucial to analyze the nature of this support:

  1. Cultural Resonance: Miss Kwara may embody qualities that resonate with South African audiences, such as advocacy for social issues, representation of beauty standards, or participation in community activities.
  2. Public Perception: The way media portrays individuals can significantly influence public support. If Miss Kwara has been positively featured in South African media or has engaged in activities that appeal to their audience, it could enhance her support base.
  3. Clarification of Intentions: By stating that her support is not intended to spite Adetshina, Miss Kwara is likely attempting to clarify any misunderstandings about her intentions. This indicates a desire for unity rather than division among supporters.

Implications of the Statement

Miss Kwara’s assertion serves multiple purposes:

  • Promoting Positive Relations: By distancing herself from any notion of animosity towards Adetshina, she fosters a more positive narrative around her candidacy or role.
  • Encouraging Inclusivity: Her statement may encourage supporters from both sides to focus on shared goals rather than rivalry.
  • Reassuring Supporters: It reassures her supporters that their backing is based on merit and shared values rather than negative feelings towards others.

She also dismissed claims that South Africans voted for her to spite Adetshina, adding that “they saw something in me other people did not see”.

“Personally, I do not know if South Africans’ support is to spite Chidimma. Because before I came for camp I started a series on Instagram called ‘Road to Miss Universe Nigeria’,” she said.

“In the series, I show my personality. I don’t know exactly how my page got to them but I think the reception is because a lot of them see themselves in me. “Particularly the South African ladies because they are really curvy and dark. That was more of the messages I was getting on my social media.

“I feel they just saw someone they could relate with on a deeper level which is why they voted me.

“I will not say they did it to spite Chidimma. They saw something in me other people did not see.”

In conclusion, Miss Kwara’s statement emphasizes the importance of understanding the motivations behind public support and clarifying intentions in competitive
