JUST IN: NFF ready to sack Rohr as Super Eagles coach
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ready to sack Gernot Rohr as Super Eagles coach, even if he wins the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Three-time African champion had already booked a place in the Round of 16 after two consecutive victories over Burundi and Guinea before losing 2-0 to debutants Madagascar, who are ranked 108th in the world.Super Eagles finish runners-up in Group B of the 32nd edition of the continental competition which sees them facing Cameroon, Ghana or Benin Republic in the last 16.
According to Sporting Life claims that top NFF officials are not impressed by the German’s tactical insight which has made them asked their lawyers to look at Rohr’s contract, as a first step to terminating his deal with Nigeria, immediately after the 2019 African Cup of Nations matches on July 19. The NFF is not impressed with the way the team is playing despite given Rohr all the necessary support he required to succeed in Egypt.
“Since Nigeria qualified for AFCON, our attackers have been clay-footed with the manager unable to evolve a system that will optimise the potential of the team’s strikers, who do well with the European clubs and in the Diaspora.
“We have given Rohr a free-hand to run the team. He picked his players for this competition unhindered. We had a few reservations about the choice of certain players. But we allowed him to go with all the technical issues, especially with the choice of players,” an NFF chieftain said.
The 66-year-old coach is in the final year of his contract after he extended his tenure by two more years just before 2018 World Cup in Russia, where the team failed to go past the first round.Rohr also led the Eagles to the 2019 AFCON after they failed to qualify for the previous two editions back-to-back.
