For most people, when they think of art in a Nigerian home, their minds immediately goes to a huge painting hanging over a sofa in the sitting room or a wooden sculpture planted beside the TV.
Well, Nigerian artist, Zoza Icha, is on a mission to broaden that definition with Asah-Bara Designs (ABD). For ABD, Zoza transforms everyday household items – from mugs to bowls – into stunning miniature art.
Zoza hopes ABD will contribute to restoring pride in handmade Nigerian art and the hands that make them.
Speaking with us about what inspired her to create ABD, Zoza said:
“My inspiration has evolved from simply wanting to make art to making art a part of everyday life.
I take art and the beauty of it from the occasional decoration and make it into a functional piece that adds enjoyment to life and living.
Art shouldn’t be something you merely look at but something you interact with. I’m African and it is my dream to offer world class, distinctly African design options to the world.”
About her vision for ABD, Zoza continued:
“The vision for Asah-Bara Designs is to establish an organization for artists. A work place where artists of different disciplines come together to create authentic African products.
They’ll be doing what they love, making an impact and being recognised for it. We will be a structured creative industry, making handmade functional art that the world will appreciate.”
