Otegha Uwagba Is Providing The Tools And Resources Women In The Creative Industry Need To Further Their Careers
Otegha Uwagba is the founder of Women Who, an initiative that aims to connect, support and inspire women working in the creative industries through publications, online content and events.
Women Who came out of Otegha’s personal experiences that being a woman in the workplace is just a different experience than being a man.
So, she decided to create a platform, a space and series of events that cater to that difference, as well as provide a space for people who may feel at a disadvantage in the workplace to find the tools and resources they need to further their careers.
Otegha focused on the creative industry because she feels that the boundaries between professional and personal are blurred and maybe difficult to navigate. So, she wanted to create a guide that actually reflects the way workplaces operate.
The initiative’s first project is Little Black Book. It features practical and philosophical advice for readers and covers topics like public speaking and the art of networking with words of wisdom from professionals in the creative industry.
The women she chose are those she knew would have interesting things to say, women who she admired and who would give proper nuggets on how they got to where they are. People whose careers she has followed for a really long time and who have navigated the creative industries really well.
One of the women whose contributions are included in the book is acclaimed novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The Little Black Book caters to self-employed women and freelancers, as well as 9-5ers.
“This is absolutely not about hashtag feminism. Women Who is a combination of all the things I’m most passionate about: creativity, women and work. I want to establish an inclusive network that feels modern and relevant, not corporate or stuffy… because being a working woman is hard enough without going it alone,”Otegha says in an interview.
Besides running Women Who, Otegha is also a writer and brand consultant, having spent years working at media powerhouse Vice and world-renowned creative agency AMV BBDO.
