Nigerian Freestyle Wrestler, John Ogbonna Is Now The World Number One
The 2018 African Wrestling Championships was held in Port Harcourt last month. Fielding a strong 90-man team, Nigeria won 23 medals – the highest in the competition. Senior freestyle wrestler, John Ogbonna won one of the country’s gold medals. And one month after the event, the United World Wrestling (UWW) has ranked him as world number one in the 70kg category!
Ogbonna represented Nigeria in Greco-Roman wrestling at Rio 2016 Olympics before switching to freestyle wrestling. Now a two-time African champion, he first came to the limelight when he won gold at the 2017 African Wrestling Championships in Marrakech, Morocco. That same year, he represented Nigeria in the World Championships in Paris.
In this latest UWW ranking, Ogbonna is followed by Ikhtiyor Navruzov from Uzbekistan and Amr Hussen from Egypt.
