Nnedi Okorafor Imagines What The People Of Wakanda Would Eat – Video
To create Wakanda, the fictional African country in Marvel’s Black Panther, the creators had to draw influences from all around the continent. From the fashion to the language, it’s clear that a lot of thought went into making what is now being called one of the best superhero movies ever.
However, the one truly African thing we wish the movie had explored a bit is our love for great food — even a mention of “Wakandan jollof” would have been a perfect gag. Thankfully, acclaimed Nigerian-American writer, Nnedi Okorafor is filling in those gaps for us.
Teaming up with Buzzfeed‘s food platform, Tasty, Okorafor — who wrote the latest Black Panther comic, Long Live The King — pulls inspiration from some East African meals to create a feast she imagines the people of Wakanda would actually eat.
Speaking about the inspiration for the food, Okorafor said:
“Wakanda is an amalgamation of several African cultures. So, just as the film pulls from African jewellery, art, textiles, architecture and music, cuisines of Wakanda would follow the same line of thinking.
Wakanda is landlocked in East Africa, so we would look to those surrounding countries for inspiration.”
About the quality of the food, she continued:
“Wakanda is a very wealthy nation, so the food would be very rich and have the finest ingredients. They’d have organic everything.
The animals that they’d eat would be clean, happy animals. Much of what Wakandans would need would come from Wakanda.”
