John Boyega Was Almost The Star Of ‘Baby Driver’, And The Internet Wants That Version
Edgar Wright’s deliriously entertaining Baby Driver was easily one of the best movies of 2017. It’s not hard to see why it wasn’t only a box office hit — it made over six times its budget — but went on to score three Oscar nominations.
Well, it turns out the movie’s protagonist, Baby — played by The Fault in Our Stars’ Ansel Elgort — almost looked completely different. British-Nigerian actor, John Boyega was reportedly very close to playing the rock and roll loving getaway driver, and the internet feels cheated.
According to Variety, Ansel Elgort beat out Perks of Being a Wallflower’s Logan Lerman and Boyega to land the lead role. Honestly, as great as Baby Driver turned out with Elgort in the lead, we can’t help but imagine how much better it would have been with Boyega in the driver’s seat.
For starters, we can all admit that Elgort as Baby was the movie’s weakest acting link. His mostly silent performance was handily outshined by that of his costars. Boyega, on the other hand, has an effortless charisma that would have shone through even without him speaking.
Now, the internet is begging Edgar Wright for a remake or a sequel with Boyega in the lead, and while we know it will probably never happen, we can’t help but hope. For now, however, it seems we might just have to manage Boyega piloting giant robots in the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel instead.
