Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative Is Empowering Northern Girls with Skills that Will Help Them Generate an Income So That They Can Pay For School

According to UNICEF, 40 per cent of Nigerian children between 6 to 11years do not attend any primary school with the Northern region recording the lowest school attendance rate in the country, particularly for girls but a woman is changing that.

Amina Hangar is the Executive Director of Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative, a non-profit organisation empowering women to enable them escape the cycle of poverty.

In her chat with BBC, Amina explained that poverty was one of the reasons the girls do not attend or drop out of school, so she decided to empower them with skills which will help them generate an income while they are at school.

Even though public schools are free, there are a lot of costs like the cost of books and uniforms which can become a financial burden but with the skills, they can use cover their basic expenses and support themselves through school.
