The internet went crazy last week when a photo of what was believed to be a Senegalese women’s basketball team surfaced online.

Can we just have a moment for this Senegalese Women’s Basketball team 😎

It turned out the photo was part of a photo shoot called ‘Picture Us Ballin’’, which was a way of spreading the word about Seed Academy Girls, a school where 20 students receive free scholarships to study and train in basketball. The project was also aimed at raising funds for the school, and wasn’t an advert for Nike – although the company provides the students with gear and some of their clothing.

The shoot, which was done in February last year, was produced and directed by Nigerian-American artist and graphic designer, Folasade Adeoso. And the girls were fully involved all the way in the project – from designing the wax prints to styling and choosing the locations.

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle, executive director of Seed Project, Noah Levine, said:

“I think the image has received a lot of attention because most people don’t expect young, African women (and most of our students are Muslim) to play sports!

Our girls are really, really, talented both on and off the court. In fact, we have nine students playing college basketball in the U.S., France, and Africa.”
