Terrorists ambush U.S. Nigerien soldiers, kill scores
No fewer than three United State soldiers and scores of Nigerien soldiers were killed when they were ambush near the country’s border with Mali.
Aside those murdered by the militants, it was gathered that two U.S. soldiers sustained fatally wounded during the attack in the West African country.
A military official, three Army Green Berets, U.S. army special forces, were killed in the ambush which took place 120 miles (193km) north of Niamey, the capital of Niger.
It was gathered they were the first American casualties to die from hostile fire since the U.S. Africa Command was established in the country. And two wounded U.S. soldiers are in stable condition and will be flown to Germany for treatment.
U.S. Africa Command disclosed that the patrol team came under hostile fire and was still working to confirm other details on what transpired during the attack.
It would be recalled that the U.S. army had training Niger’s army to help combat Islamist militants in the region, including the North African branch of al-Qaeda.
The militants are most active in neighbouring Mali, where French troops intervened in 2013 to prevent them advancing on the capital. Also, Boko Haram group, based in Nigeria to the south, has also staged several attacks in Niger.
White House spokesperson, Sarah Sanders, hinted that U.S. President, Donald Trump, has been briefed by his chief-of-staff, John Kelly, about the attack.
