GCSEs add up for British Nigerian Mathematical Siblings – Zipporah and Andrew Ejemai
It’s a family affair! Being a Maths whizz runs in the Ejemai family as 12-year-old Zipporah follows in her big brother’s footsteps by gaining an astonishing A* in her Mathematics GCSE years earlier than expected.
Zipporah, who took the more difficult International GCSE in the First Year, is continuing a family tradition which saw brother Andrew achieve an A* in the same qualification when he was just nine years old.
Fifteen-year-old Andrew also picked up his GCSE results on Thursday and achieved an outstanding tally of 10 A*s and 4As. He has also achieved additional free-standing qualifications in the Foundations of Advanced Maths, Additional Maths and Thinking and Reasoning Skills, as well as two A Levels, for which he received an A*. Andrew is hoping to study at Cambridge University a year early.
Headmaster Mr Ian Davies said: “We have lots of talented mathematicians at Brentwood but Andrew and Zipporah are exceptional. We are fortunate to have a cohort of exceptional Mathematics teachers who were more than able to teach to Oxford and Cambridge level.”

This Picture is of 12-year-old Maths prodigy Andrew Ejemai with mum Ronke and sister Zipporah on 15th August 2013. Andrew was among Brentwood School students jumping for joy today as the School celebrated another bumper year of A Level results.
Andrew Ejemai scored a phenomenal A* grade in his Maths A Level making him the youngest student in the School’s long and illustrious history to pass the qualification. Another 100% pass rate for all Upper Sixth A Level students saw a record 52% of the top scorers achieve the coveted A* – A grades – the School’s best ever result.
Of the 133 students who sat this year’s A Levels, eight have gained places at Oxford or Cambridge and a further five will be going off to study medicine, one of the most highly competitive courses. A wonderful set of marks saw 80% A* – B grades, maintaining the enviable standard set last year, and 37 excited youngsters opened their envelopes to find they had achieved all A* and A grades. An outstanding 95% of passes were graded A* – C.
Headmaster Mr Ian Davies said: “These wonderful examination results are an accurate reflection of the hard work, enthusiasm and determination of our students this year. At a time when nationally there has been grade deflation our students have maintained the record results of last year.”
He added: “The one-to-one support provided by our inspirational teachers clearly has made a considerable difference to the achievements of these pupils.” As for Andrew, who has just completed his second year at Brentwood, Mr Davies said: “Andrew is an extraordinary mathematician and we are very proud of his achievement.
The School is fortunate to have a cohort of exceptional mathematics teachers who are more than able to teach to Oxbridge level.” Andrew, who attended Brentwood Preparatory School before he moved to the Senior School scored an A* in the more difficult International GCSE when he was just nine years old. A modest Andrew said he had a natural aptitude for Maths but he “still had to do a bit of work!” He had been hoping for the A* but had not been sure he would get it.
He added: “I enjoy Maths. It’s fun to do Maths problems.” Head of Mathematics, Mr Jon Williams, said: “Andrew is a very talented young man with an exceptional ability in Mathematics. To have completed his A Level by the age of 12 is impressive enough.
To have achieved an A* grade is phenomenal.” Andrew’s delighted mother, Mrs Ronke Ejemai, shouted “Wow” when her son revealed his marks. “I am just so excited. He has done so well with the School and Mr Williams has really encouraged him.”
She added: “The encouragement, all the facilities, this environment has been very supportive.” And Mrs Ejemai said although she liked Maths, Andrew did not get his mathematical talent from either her or his dad, Sony. Andrew is also excelling in Sciences, Latin, Greek and Athletics.
He now hopes to study Further Maths at A Level. Most students’ excellent grades were enough to accept their first choice offers from leading universities. Mr Davies was in the Memorial Hall this morning to congratulate students as they nervously collected their sealed envelopes. An emotional Lauren Tai, Head of School 2012-13, was thrilled to have achieved A*s in Geography and Latin and an A in History and is now off to the University College London to study Law.
She said she had greatly enjoyed her time at Brentwood and without the experience, she would not have developed the character, confidence and work ethic she has today. Mark Baldock, one of last year’s Deputy Heads, was delighted to reveal A*s in Latin and Religious Studies and an A in Greek.
Despite falling short of straight A*s by just 1 point, Mark will join Cambridge University to study Classics. He thanked all members of staff for their support and praised the School for their efforts at encouraging all students to achieve their full potential. Undecided on his long-term goals, Mark said he may pursue a career in academia and lecture in Classics or writing. Jonathan Streatfeild’s well-earned A* in French, 2 As in Geography and Maths and a B in Further Mathematics have earned him a place at Oxford where he will study Law.
He praised the Brentwood School experience as a whole and commended the teaching as “top-notch”. Jonathan is also undecided on his long-term goals but sees Law as an appealing profession. James Bowler was overjoyed to discover his A* in Politics and 2 As in Economics and History. He will also be starting at UCL later this year where he will study Law. Impressed by the enthusiasm of the staff, James aims to return to Brentwood School after university to join them as a teacher!
These impressive A Level results follow the School’s super performance for the International Baccalaureate Diploma when an average student score of 36 points was announced last month.
