Ituah Enahoro Has Broken The Nigerian Decathlon Record

The decathlon is a competition in which athletes participate in ten combined track and field events. The Thorpe Cup which takes place between USA and Germany is one of such competitions. And at this year’s edition in Düsseldorf on July 30, Ituah Enahoro did Nigeria proud by crossing 8000 points.

Born in Nigeria to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Enahoro’s history in track and field started in Aruba in 2008 when he ditched football to focus on athletics, starting with the decathlon. In 2013, he represented the Netherlands before swapping to Nigeria out of his dream to take the country to the Olympics.

At 15, he made an appearance for Nigeria at the IAAF World Youth Championship in Ukraine. His second appearance for the country was in 2015 at the Junior African Nations Cup in Athletics in Addis Ababa where he won silver. After these competitions, Enahoro was never invited by Nigeria for further events. So, he shifted his focus to Germany.

Enahoro’s achievement at the Thorpe Cup makes him one of the few decathletes to surpass the 8000-point mark. Although he represented Germany at the competition, the 19-year-old broke the Nigerian decathlon record of 7252 points set by Peter Moreno in Bedford two months ago.

His performance has also been ranked as the third world best by an under-20 athlete.
