Check Out These Alternate Covers For Wizkid’s ‘Sounds From The Other Side’ EP

A couple days ago, Wizkid released the cover art for his upcoming EP, Sounds From The Other Side, and the reactions from Nigerians were less than positive – with fans and industry experts claiming that RCA doesn’t seem to care about the Starboy’s image.

Even Wizkid himself decided to poke a little fun at the cover art with a tweet saying the picture should be the new cover for Oxford’s cabin biscuits.

While fans were busy going off on the original cover art, graphic designer Niyi Abiola-Oloke, decided to use that opportunity for a little self-promotion and designed four alternate covers for the project.

He shared the designs on Twitter and his tweet has since garnered over 1000 retweets – with people almost unanimously praising his work. So, we at Konbini designed to speak with Niyi to find out what inspired each and every alternate cover.

From the outside looking in

“I kind of had the idea of Wizkid being in his own space. Kind of on his own wave and doing his own thing.

And the idea of him being behind a door, isolated and in his zone, with the viewer kind of peeping in seemed to fit.

It also adds a kind of intimacy to the piece because I look at it and get the feeling I’m being a witness to something very personal to Wizkid.”

Blue is the warmest colour

“I did it because it makes Wizkid look kind of stately. It’s less of a Wizkid-centric thing and more of my own personal style.

I personally like pieces that have a strong contrast with select colors and that’s where the palette comes from.

This was also the least challenging piece simply because I wasn’t going too far from my own comfort zone.”

A modern alien vibe

“This piece was the toughest to design. The text alone took me like 3 hours to do. I wanted to give it a kind of alien but somewhat modern vibe.

Wizkid’s get-up plus the lighting made it click for me. This is also my favorite of the three, and the general consensus agrees with me.”

Literally, sounds from the other side

“This was the cover that I was trying to do from the start but I kept going off on different tangents, which was how the first three came about.

I feel the cover kind of speaks for itself, as a kind of extended version of the first one. I feel this one exemplifies the name of the album the most.”

An alternate version of “Come Closer”

So, while we are on the topic of alternatives to the original, an unreleased version of Wizkid and Drake’s “Come Closer” video leaked over the weekend – and it’s pretty dope.

The colourful video, which was directed by Solange’s husband Alan Ferguson, is the complete opposite of the minimalist original directed by Dapo Fagbenle.

And while we prefer the one they finally went it, Ferguson’s video is still a pretty solid effort. Who knows, Wizkid could have easily released both of them together à la Rihanna’s double-serving of “Work”.
