Watch The Hilarious Trailer For The Viola Davis-Produced ‘American Koko’

It’s been an interesting year for black people in TV. There hasn’t been enough new content but between Insecure, Atlanta, and Dear White People, we’ve seen a blend of bravado, comedic gold and vulnerability that we don’t get to see in the just one show.

Last year, ABC announced the relaunch of its free streaming service, ABCd (ABC Digital), that would be home to classic series and new content made specifically for it. “American Koko,” is one of the shows that was added.

The show which was originally made by Diarra Kilpatrick for her YouTube channel, was produced by Viola Davis for ABC.

After making its debut as a special presentation at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) over the weekend, the series has now premiered online at ABC Digital. There are two seasons available, with six episodes for each, making it the perfect show for a weekend binge.

Its premise is pretty simple. Akosua Millard (Diarra Kilpatrick) aka Koko, is a member of the E.A.R. Agency (Everybody’s A little bit Racist). Together, they investigate and solve tricky racial issues in a “post post-racial America”. As she and her team of specialists tackle cases, Koko deals with her own case. She’s had outbursts of ‘Angry Black Woman Syndrome’ in the past and tries to reconcile that. Think Dear White People but with a dash of Viola Davis’ magic.
