NGO inspires young climate champions through games

A non-governmental organization, Ecocykle Development Foundation, has launched a fun and innovative programme tagged the Climate Edutainment (ClimEd) Project to bridge the knowledge gap among young people on climate change and environmental challenges.

Executive Director of Ecocykle, Mrs Lauritta Boniface, said the initiative demonstrates how games can be powerful tools for learning and inspiring action.

She explained that by combining fun with knowledge, the organisation is raising a new generation of climate champions who can creatively speak up for the planet.

At the centre of the project is the PLAN (Play, Learn, Act Now) Climate Action Game—a card game that simplifies complex climate issues into engaging lessons. This has been introduced in 11 countries to educate over 5,000 students, the game was deployed in Abuja schools to promote teamwork, problem-solving, and creative climate advocacy.

The project, which ran from September 29 to October 3, 2025, climaxed with a grand finale at Primark International School, Jikwoyi, Abuja, where more than 60 students participated in workshops and group activities. They co-created and pitched advocacy strategies through poetry, drama, dance, and art demonstrating practical solutions to real-world environmental challenges.

A panel of judges was led by Mrs Elsie Imaikop of the Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment. Prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

Beyond cash rewards, participants acquired skills in teamwork, innovation, and climate advocacy. To sustain the impact, Ecocykle donated 20 packs of the PLAN Game and launched the school’s Climate Edutainment Club.

Program Director of Ecosteward Foundation, Mr. Nweze Emmanuel, said the Foundation was honoured to partner on the Climate Edutainment Project, describing it as an innovative initiative that empowers young learners to create solutions to climate challenges.

He added that by blending education with creativity, the project is nurturing a generation of climate-conscious youth who will champion sustainable practices in their schools and communities.

The project was supported the Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment, alongside Green Protocol Nigeria, Young Professionals for Policy and Development and Positive Action for Climate Initiative (PACi)..
