Stakeholders chart path for Nigeria’s building sector

In a major step towards positioning Nigeria’s building sector at the forefront of climate action, stakeholders converged in Lagos to chart pathways for sustainable building practices that align with the country’s climate goals.

Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, represented by the Senior Special Assistant on Urban Development, Segun Williams, reaffirmed Lagos’ commitment to supporting sustainable development, green energy, and green building practices.

He explained that the workshop, organised by the Green Building Council Nigeria (GBCN), in collaboration with the Lagos State Office of e-GIS and Urban Development, aims to help Nigeria align its policies, regulations, finance mechanisms, and delivery strategies with national climate commitments.

In her remarks, Arc. Sangeetha Ramaraj, the Technical and Innovation Officer at GBCN, noted strong alignment on key issues such as building codes, finance, and data.

She, however, highlighted gaps in enforcement and stressed the need for subnational adaptation of national policies.

The event featured panel discussions, fireside chats, and peer-learning sessions, where participants shared insights on curriculum reforms, resilient infrastructure, and low-carbon materials.
