Celebration of workers day across states
The Zamfara State Government has cleared over ₦13 billion in outstanding gratuities, marking a major milestone in its efforts to enhance the welfare of retired civil servants.
This was disclosed by the State Deputy Governor, Mani Malam Mummuni, during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau, the state capital.
Mummuni emphasized that the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal remains steadfast in tackling the pressing concerns of both current and retired workers in the state.
“We are aware of workers mistakenly removed from the payroll following the staff verification exercise,” he stated. “A committee led by the Head of Civil Service has been set up to address and resolve the issue promptly.”
He highlighted several reforms aimed at improving workers’ welfare, including the commencement of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage for civil servants.
“This move reflects our genuine commitment to easing the economic burden on workers,” Mummuni said.
Beyond salary reforms, he noted that the administration is prioritizing the needs of retirees, acknowledging the decades of service they rendered to the state.
Responding to workers’ concerns about delayed promotions, Mummuni assured that the implementation of promotion benefits—particularly for those with multiple pending promotions—is underway.
“On this special day, I salute the resilience and dedication of Zamfara workers. Your courage and commitment inspire us. May God bless you all,” he concluded.
In his remarks, Comrade Saidu Mudi, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Zamfara State Council, urged the government to address outstanding demands such as:
Full implementation of the new minimum wage, release of the approved salary structure and upward review of pensions reinstatement of workers erroneously removed from payroll
Comrade Sani Halliru, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Zamfara, stressed the significance of Workers’ Day and the need for continuous support for workers.

Kebbi
The Kebbi State Government, assured civil servants in the state of continued commitment towards improvement of their Welfare and as well the protection of their rights and privileges.
Governor Nasir Idris who gave the assurance while addressing workers to mark the May Day Celebration in Birnin Kebbi, emphasized that workers were invaluable partners in the development of Kebbi State and remain critical stakeholders who cannot be ignored.
Governor Idris, who described the May Day celebration as an important occasion, commended the workers for their dedication and the remarkable contributions towards the development of the state.
Earlier in a remark, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Murtala Usman, expressed appreciation on behalf of both the NLC and TUC for the Governor’s outstanding attention to worker’s welfare and development.
Comrade Usman lauded the Governor’s continuous support for the workers, describing his presence at the 2025 May Day celebration as expected considering his background as a veteran and top-notch unionist as well as a former labour leader.

Anambra
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has commended the contributions of Anambra workers to the state’s development, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fostering a conducive work environment.
Speaking at the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration in Awka with the theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space Amidst Economic Hardship,” Governor Soludo assured public servants of his government’s support in addressing their rights and concerns.
He emphasized the need for collective efforts and dialogue in rebuilding a better Nigeria.
Notably, he announced the successful payment of a 4-year backlog of pensions and gratuities for retired Anambra workers, as well as continued payment of pensions and gratuities since taking office.
Earlier, the Nigeria Labour Congress Chairman, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor as well his TUC counterpart Comrade Chris Ogbonna , the attention of the governor to key concerns, including implementing the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure and harmonizing state pensions with national standards, domestication of retirement age policy of 40years of service or 65years of age for teachers and an increased running costs for school heads among others.

Jigawa
Governor of Jigawa state, Umar Namadi has joined organized labour unions in commemorating the invaluable contributions of workers to the development of Jigawa State.
Delivering his speech, Governor Namadi praised the resilience of Jigawa’s workforce, describing the workers as the catalyst for development and progress.
He explained that, workers across all sectors truly serve as the engine that provides the driving force propelling societies towards progress and development.
He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to workers welfare, citing landmark achievements such as the implementation of a N70,000 minimum wage, construction of affordable housing for civil servants, and the injection of over N7 billion into the state’s contributory pension scheme.
Comrade Sunusi Alhassan Maigatari, speaking on behalf of the Organized Labour, acknowledged the strides, describing Governor Namadi as both labour friendly and a governor of the people.
He particularly commended the administration’s 12-point agenda, which has delivered tangible benefits including mass recruitment in critical sectors, agricultural loan schemes for workers, and the establishment of palliative shops to cushion economic hardships.

Osun
Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers, describing his government as one “of workers, by the workers, and for the workers.”
Speaking at the 2025 May Day rally in Osogbo, the Governor reiterated that workers’ welfare remains his top priority.
Governor Adeleke empathized with workers over the current economic hardships in the country, acknowledging the effect of inflation and high living costs.
“We feel your pains,” he said, assuring workers that his administration would continue to prioritize their needs and collaborate with the Federal Government to lessen the burden on citizens.”
On workers’ welfare, Governor Adeleke stated that his government continues to implement the new minimum wage without fail and has cleared all outstanding salary deductions owed by previous administrations, stressing the importance of continuous capacity-building for public servants to enhance service delivery.
In a remark from the Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi represented by State Controller, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Alabi Solomon lauded Nigerian workers as “the wind beneath the nation’s wings” and praised their resilience and patriotism in facing national challenges.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Osun State, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, underscored the relevance of the year’s theme, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship”, describing it as a rallying cry for workers to amplify their voices, safeguard their rights, and advocate for a just society.
