NAWIS urges members to actively participate in IWD 2025

The celebrations aim to not only honour the achievements of women in sports but also to advocate for greater opportunities and recognition for women in Nigeria’s sporting landscape.

As the world prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, 2025, the National Association for Women in Sports (NAWIS) has called on its members across Nigeria to actively participate in the programmes and activities lined up to mark the occasion.

In a statement issued by the association, which represents both former and active sportswomen in the country, NAWIS President Professor Mariam Suleiman emphasised the importance of the day and its theme, “Accelerate Action: Invest in Women.”

She noted that the theme, chosen by the United Nations (UN), reflects the global recognition of women as invaluable contributors to their homes, communities, nations, and the world at large.

Professor Suleiman highlighted the remarkable achievements of Nigerian female athletes, such as world record holder Tobi Amusan, Olympic and Commonwealth medalist Ese Brume, and wrestling champion Blessing Oborodudu, as examples of the exceptional talent and dedication of Nigerian women in sports.

She stressed the need for greater investment and support for women in all aspects of sports by the nation’s sporting authorities.

To commemorate the day, NAWIS has directed its chapters nationwide to organise rallies, seminars, and other enlightenment activities aimed at promoting women’s empowerment, inclusion, and equality in sports.

Additionally, NAWIS members are encouraged to participate in events organised by the Women Commission of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), which will hold simultaneous celebrations in three cities: Owerri, Lagos, and Abuja.

In Abuja, the event will feature a two-part programme, including a medical outreach and an all-gender novelty football match and will be attended by prominent figures, including Gloria Ekwempu, Chairperson of the NAWIS FCT Chapter.
