The anticipation is high for the first-ever Yucateco World Boxing Council (WBC) Amateur Championship, scheduled to take place in Lagos from February 2 to February 8, 2025.
The event is scheduled to take place at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Omonlei Imadu, CEO of Yucateco, shared his excitement describing the championship as a ground-breaking moment for amateur boxing in Africa.
He revealed that the tournament will also serve as a qualifier for the inaugural WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup, set to hold in Mexico later this year.
The championship will bring together amateur boxers from eight countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Togo, Senegal, Ghana, Mali, Cameroon, and the host nation, Nigeria.
“I am thrilled to see this vision come to life. Bringing the first WBC amateur tournament to Africa is no small feat, and I am especially proud that this historic event is happening in Nigeria,” Imadu said.
He added, “We are bringing the world to Lagos, and the presence of global boxing figures such as WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán and Africa Boxing Union (ABU) President Houcine Houichi makes this even more special.”
Prestigious Titles and Recognition
Imadu highlighted that the Most Valuable Boxers in each weight category will receive the coveted WBC Amateur title belt and secure their spots at the WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup in Mexico.
“This is unprecedented in African amateur boxing. Winners in each category will not only advance to the World Cup but also take home the prestigious WBC Amateur title belt,” he noted.
With its world-class organization and global reach, the inaugural WBC Amateur Boxing Championship in Lagos promises to elevate African boxing to new heights
