NEMA deploys additional rescue teams to flood-affected Maiduguri
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed additional search and rescue personnel to assist Maiduguri residents trapped in their homes due to a devastating flood disaster. The agency has also warned against a waterborne epidemic due to flood contamination of household water.
In light of this, they have provided safe clean water to displaced residents, using its water tanker to temporary shelters, including Bakassi camp.
Since the flooding began last weekend due to heavy rains and the overflowing Alau dam, the agency has been working with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency and other stakeholders to conduct search and rescue operations and assess the situation for appropriate assistance.
Vice President, Kashim Shettima yesterday led a high-powered Federal Government delegation that included the DG NEMA to the flood-ravaged Maiduguri metropolis for an on-the-spot assessment and to commiserate with the people and Government of Borno State.
The Vice President reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to helping the affected individuals and communities and making sure that recovery efforts reach every area affected by the flood disaster while speaking to the displaced people currently seeking asylum at the Bakkasi camp run by the State Government.
The delegation also visited the palace of the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al Amin El-Kanemi. He commended NEMA and other agencies including volunteers working to provide safety and support to affected persons.
