American Heavyweight Boxer, Deontay Wilder Reveals He’s Of Nigerian Descent

Since Anthony Joshua beat Alexander Povetkin, fans have been demanding the unified heavyweight champion fight the WBC heavyweight titleholder, Deontay Wilder. While we expect that to happen next year, Wilder has thrown a twist into the potential contest by revealing he’s of Nigerian descent.

The boxer said this in a roundtable discussion with former heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, whom he’s getting ready to fight on December 1. While responding to Fury’s question about where he gets the confidence that he’ll beat him, the American said:

“It can be an alter ego. It can be a spirit. It may be an ancestry spirit. Who knows? I’m part-Nigerian.”

Although he’s never been to Nigeria before, Wilder has obviously dug into his ancestry. That he’s making this revelation at this time could be a strategy to put Joshua in Fury’s head, given that the British-Nigerian now inspires fear in the boxing world.

So, if Wilder ends up beating Tyson Fury to become Joshua’s next contender, it means we’ll have two boxers with Nigerian roots vying to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion. How cool would that be?

Watch the moment he made the revelation below:
