Watch Falz Explain The Message Behind His Viral ‘This Is Nigeria’ Video

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve definitely seen and/or heard about Childish Gambino’s “This Is America”, which went viral as soon as it was released.

The powerful song and video has since been replicated, ignorantly gentrified parodied and also think-pieced to no end. This is why Falz‘s interpretation of it,  “This Is Nigeria”, was pretty expected.

Like we said when it was released, Falz’ version is a bit too broad to land as effectively as Childish Gambino’s did. But while it isn’t as thoughtful as the song and video that inspired it, it still draws attention to the dismal state of our country’s affairs, and that’s good enough.

On an episode of Hello Nigeria, Falz discussed the inspiration behind the video, why we need it and what the not-so-hidden meanings were. He faced a lot of backlash following the release of the video, where people thought it was flagrant of him to turn sensitive issues in the country into satire, which he clears up in this video.

Falz wants all of us to pause and think about our social space, and think about the way our country’s state affects us as individuals and as a people.
