The undisputed afro-house queen, Niniola had a really great 2017. She not only nabbed two monster hits — “Maradona” and “Sicker” were pretty much inescapable — she also dropped one of the best Nigerian albums of the year, This Is Me.
So far this year, she’s released crisp music videos for two strong tracks off the album — “Saro” and “Oyin” — and now she’s back with another video for the catchy track, “Magun”.
Since the three biggest hits she’s scored off the album (“Maradona”, “Sicker” and “Saro”) were all produced by the brilliant Sarz, it’s not surprising that she’s pushing “Magun”, the fourth and last song helmed by him.
On the brazen track, Niniola sings about having an affair free of sex. She tells her lover that “only foreplay is allowed” because her partner has jazzed her with magun, a charm intended to prevent women from cheating on their husbands.
The music video, which was directed by Clarence Peters, isn’t as narrative-driven as her last two videos. The needlessly eerie and confusing clip, which is more in line with the performative nature of “Sicker”, is probably our least favourite Niniola video since “Maradona”.
