Anyone who was paying even a little attention will tell you that Phyno was one of the most consistently brilliant artists we had in 2017. He gave us banger after banger that we clearly didn’t deserve, considering they didn’t perform as well as they should have.
Not one to hold a grudge it seems, Phyno then ushered us into 2018 with yet another jam, “Isi Ego”. While it looks like the track is at risk of being ignored yet again, he just dropped a crisp music video that should hopefully get more eyes on it.
Produced by I Am Beats — the genius behind his underrated 2017 gem, “If To Say”— the smooth “Isi Ego” is one of Phyno’s most enjoyable rap songs in a while. Delivering the track entirely in Igbo, Phyno continues to prove that whether he is rapping or singing, he is one of our strongest artists.
For the music video, Phyno teams up again with Unlimited LA — who has directed most of his recent videos — and it’s clearly a partnership that works. While they are definitely not breaking new ground in this department, he’s helped Phyno create an aesthetic that fits his vibe.
So, following “If To Say” and the Wande Coal-assisted “Zamo Zamo”, “Isi Ego” is even more proof that we should be really excited for Phyno’s third studio album. He is clearly gearing up to release another solid and diverse body of work.
