How Titi Belo’s Alma Mater, Queen’s College Inspired Her Latest Collection
Titi Belo‘s showcase at LFDW 2017 definitely stood out for many reasons, one of them being the fact that the designer paid homage to her alma mater Queen’s College.
Drawing inspiration from the school’s colours and uniform, there was a definite girl power feel to this collection which the models exuded as they stormed the runway!
According to the designer, the Titi Belo label began long before their clothes began to grace runways and elicit glowing reviews from fashion critics. The brand began in the heart of Queen’s College, Lagos, where the hallways served as their first runway, the dorm rooms were their first private presentation spaces, and fellow pupils their first muses.
Speaking to us about her alma mater inspiring her S/S 18 collection, Titi Belo said:
“QC Girls love when something unites them, they love to remember the amazing time they had back then, they love to be a part of what another QCOG is offering.
I have received so much support, comments, words of encouragement and of course orders since the collection debuted at LFDW.
I have connected with so many QCOG even those who graduated the year I was born and those who graduated the year I finished NYSC!“
The dominant colours from this collection were blue and white, which is reminiscent of the school uniform’s colours. The silhouettes deconstruct the school’s uniform and also draw inspiration from what was in fashion at the time with pieces like denim skirts, inscribed t-shirts and pinafore dresses.
The classic graffiti t-shirts were a fashion staple, and Titi Belo brings back this trend with t shirts that say “Bubbler” a QC slang for popular girl, and “QCOG” which stands for Queen’s College Old Girl. Ruffles, pleats and layers are also taken in a new direction with this collection, which is a liberation from the stuffy pleated QC uniform skirts.
Speaking again about Queen’s College inspiring the collection, Titi Belo said:
“QC was a huge part of my teenage years, it also was where I learnt most of my life’s lessons.
90% of my that part of my life was spent there so it was only normal to include the experience while telling the story of that part of my life through my SS18 Collection.”
Who knew you could turn your secondary school experience into a cool fashion brand? Titi Belo got there first, and she really ‘wuz ere’!
