5 Countries You Didn’t Know Had Places Named Lagos
To the average Nigerian, our Lagos is the one and only.
It turns out Lagos, Nigeria is not unique. There are many other “Lagoses” out there. Lagos in Portuguese means Lakes. The name was given to the Nigerian state centuries ago when the first Portuguese traders docked here. Although many Lagosians know the state by many other monikers like Eko, Las Gidi or plain Gidi, the name Lagos is not unique to Naija. Here are other countries with places named Lagos:
1. Greece
Greece has a place named Lagos and it can be found in the Xanthi regional unit. Lagos in Greece like the one in Nigeria is also a coastal city.
2. Portugal
This is perhaps the most famous of the “Lagoses” after Nigeria’s Lagos. It is believed that the Nigerian state with the same name was named after this municipality by Portuguese traders centuries ago. Tourists enjoy the beaches, coves and caves that dot this coastal municipality.
3. Spain
We were not surprised to learn of the Spanish Lagos which is located in the Province of Malaga. Pristine beaches and the annual 3-day fair in August are some of the things one can look forward to in this beautiful town.
4. France
France joins the list with its commune in the Southwestern region of the country. It has a population of 475.
5. Chile
There is a region in Chile known as Los Lagos. It is located in Southern Chile and is famous for its thick luscious forests and lakes.
