Experience Berlin’s Infamous Nightlife Right Here In Lagos, Starting Today

In a 2014 New Yorker article, journalist Nick Paumgarten astutely pointed out that “Berlin is to electronic music what Florence was to Renaissance art: crucible, arbiter, patron” – and he was absolutely right.

After the fall of communism in East Germany, techno was the youth culture that united the city. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, clubs and bars began popping up, quickly turning the city into the epicenter of club culture – a culture that’s still thriving today.

Well, Lagosians will be able to get a taste of that culture thanks to Black Box, an immersive electronic music and photography exhibition by Berlin-based photographer and club bouncer, Sven Marquardt, with accompanying music from acclaimed DJ Marcel Dettmann.

For the past 14 years, Sven has been taking stunning photographs of the DJs, bar staff and fellow bouncers at the infamously exclusive Berghain, where he works. While Berghain resident Marcel is one of the most successful international techno DJs in the world, spinning over 100 times a year.

The exhibition starts today, October 27, and will be followed by an artist talk with Sven Marquardt on Saturday, October 28. The venue is the Konbini office/African Artists’ Foundation: 3B Isiola Oyekan Close, off Adeleke Adedoyin, off Kofo Abayomi, Victoria Island, Lagos.
