Olisa Adibua, host of Nigerian travel food doc-series, “Bukas and Joint” is one of the most respected OAP in Nigeria.

In his words, “Interacting with the owners of the bukas or joints on one side and interacting with the customers that patronize these joints is another experience. There is a lot of pride amongst the owners in the sense that some of them have been on the same spot for decades, so they must have gotten something right which makes people come back for more, so I feel they need to be celebrated and it is so funny that these people don’t even know how much they have achieved that they remain humble when you meet them. I think they are people who should be praised and celebrated for maintaining our culture.”

Olisa didn’t stop at his experience with the owners, he also revealed his experiences with some of the customers saying they are proud Nigerians, who are also proud of their food and heritage.

In his words, “Now for the customers, who come there, they are proud Nigerians, who are proud of their food. Some of these people are people who remember the foods their mothers cooked while they were not in the city and they just want to have that taste again. Some just want to experiment and they eat everything to see how tasty delicacies which are not from their own area taste.

“So, it’s an eye opener for me and has shown me that Nigerians no matter how rich they are or successful or well-traveled, when they return home, there is always somewhere they get a kind of food or delicacy that they use to long for.

“So, it’s also a way of connecting with people and the whole demography of Nigeria. There are some things that keeps us united as a nation and majorly is our food, the cuisines, music, sports, movies but food is an intriguing one that transcends. I don’t eat food because I’m from a particular place, however, I eat food because I like the taste. And everywhere we go, the food will always have their unique taste and style but the most important thing is that we are celebrating the Nigerian food and culture,” he said.
