Why You Should Donate To Ikeja Grammar School’s Book Club

Young Nigerians generally have very poor reading habits for a bunch of reasons – from digital distractions to an overall lack of time. This choice, however, is a luxury to some, as others such as the students of Ikeja Grammar School don’t even have adequate access to books to begin with.

This is why three young Nigerians – Timi Ajiboye, Jola Ayeye and Ire Aderinokun – are calling on the general public to donate books to Ikeja Grammar School’s Book Club.

Timi Ajiboye, whose mum works at the school, asked him to encourage young people to help out, so these students have a plethora of books to read. Speaking to us he said:

“My mum is an English teacher at Ikeja Senior Grammar School and they’ve been thinking about how to expose the kids to more.

She said to me ‘since we can’t afford to buy computers and enlighten the kids more through tech, we can at least get them books’.”

There is a lot of power in information, and it’s a shame that this information is not distributed evenly. This is why it’s great that initiatives like this and others such as Tobi Jaiyesimi’s The Book Banque exist to get books in front of more people.

About the importance of supporting the book club, Jola Ayeye said:

“Building a library can be cumbersome and government channels can get really bureaucratic so the best bet is getting the public involved.

I feel like reading saved my life as a teenager and is a direct contributor to my imagination, which is a big part of what I do now as a content creator.”

So, if you have a shelf full of books just gathering dust, please find details below, and donate to the Ikeja Grammar School’s Book Club!
