5 Nollywood Classics That Deserve To Be Remembered By A New Generation

Growing up, Nollywood movies were often neglected, however in recent times, there is a rising appreciated for Nigerian films, thanks to movies like The Wedding Party and Banana Island Ghost.

These days, Nollywood movies are more successful in the Nigerian box office than their Hollywood counterparts, and given this, it is only fair to pay homage to the classics which served as a jumping off point.

1. Thunderbolt Magun

Ngozi (Bukky Ajayi) is rumoured to be having extra marital affairs, and so her husband Yinka (Lanre Akinyele) does as he knows by Yoruba tradition and places a curse on her. Released in 2001, this movie tells a story of an intertribal marriage, and how traditional norms can cause problems within a marriage.

2. Domitilla

Way ahead of its time, Domitilla began the wave of the ‘single gal’ narrative in Nollywood, chronicling the lives of young girls who move to a big city in a quest to make money. The movie highlights how these ladies are fuelled by greed and the need for access and excess, and how they subsequently run into trouble.

3. Baby Police

Aki and Paw Paw might not be as funny today, but in their prime they were HILARIOUS! Baby Police, like most other comedies from that time, had no real storyline or plot, but was sure to make you wet your pants!

4. Girls Cot

This movie featured a lot of Nollywood’s top actors at the time, and was also hilarious and entertaining! The storyline touched on the pressures that lead people into playing to the gallery and the consequences that arise as a result. This movie is still pertinent in today’s society, watch trailer below

5. Osuofia in London

Another comedy that presents the archetypal JJC, Osuofia, who lives in Eastern Nigeria as a hunter with his massive family. In his voyage to London, he comes face to face with many things that are foreign to him and his reactions make for a hilarious three-part movie.
