Meet Odunayo Adekuoroye, The World Number One Female Freestyle Wrestler

A few months ago, we at Konbini listed Odunayo Adekuoroye as one of four Nigerian female freestyle wrestlers making the country proud. And she affirmed this claim on August 10 when she emerged world number one at 55kg on the United World Wrestling (UWW) women’s freestyle rankings.

According to the official website of UWW, Adekuoroye, who is unarguably Africa’s number one, overtook the number one wrestlers in Asia and Europe to occupy this highest position.

Not a stranger to victory in freestyle wrestling, the 23-year-old participated in the 2014 Commonwealth Games where she won a gold medal. In 2015, she won a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships, sealing her reputation as the most popular wrestler in Nigeria and one of the biggest stars in women’s wrestling.

Yesterday, she became the first Nigerian female wrestler to get to the final of the World Wrestling Championships taking place in Paris, where she won a silver medal – narrowly missing out on becoming the first African woman to win a gold medal at the event.

With this record and her appearance at Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Adekuoroye has contributed so much in uplifting the image of Nigeria in freestyle wrestling. And we’re darn positive she’ll continue making history.
