Akin Omotoso’s ‘Vaya’ To Be Submitted For 2018 Oscar Consideration
Nigeria-born South Africa-based filmmaker, Akin Omotoso, has been having a pretty great year. Just last month, his 2016 feature film, Vaya, won three awards at the Africa Movie Academy Awards including ‘Best Director’.
With all the goodwill Vaya has gathered since it premiered at TIFF, it’s no surprise that it’s been selected as one of South Africa’s submissions for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ at the 90th Academy Awards.
South Africa has submitted films for the Academy Award for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ since 1989. Two of their submissions – Yesterday and Tsotsi – ended up nabbing nominations, with Gavin Hood’s Tsotsi eventually taking home the Oscar in 2006.
Inspired by true events, Omotoso’s Vaya weaves together three separate stories to create a gripping yet compassionate portrait of small town characters immersed in the intimidating, alluring, and dangerous world of big city Johannesburg and Soweto.
While there’s no news about if or when the movie will premiere in Nigeria, it will be getting a limited, Oscar-qualifying release on September 15 before a general release in South African cinemas on October 27.
