La Liga Will Open Football Academies In Nigeria

Last month, the top league in Spanish football, La Liga, launched its first ever football academy in UAE. Now, the league is looking at the talent that exists in Nigeria and is seriously making plans to open academies in the country.

To achieve this, La Liga is partnering with a Nigerian sports marketing outfit, Legacy Sports. The CEO of the outfit, Phillip Diwan, disclosed that they’re using the partnership as their own way of contributing to the development of football in Nigeria. Through Legacy Sports, La Liga will bring coaches from Spain to give Nigerian players and coaches firsthand experience in professional football. Vanguard quotes Diwan as saying:

“More than that, we also plan to start a football academy in Lagos this year. The academy will take care of players who show potential in both soccer as well as academics. We will offer them full scholarship to further their education while they play.”

Vicente Casado, La Liga international development officer, confirmed the plans, saying that “there is so much passion on display in Nigeria” and they hope to leverage on that to make the Spanish League more popular in the country.

  

Meanwhile, KweseESPN reports that, before the end of the year, there will be a tour of the La Liga trophy across Nigeria, a grand viewing of El Classico with 10000 fans and La Liga ambassadors present, and a La Liga legends’ match against Nigerian legends.
