August Udoh Beautifully Captures The Strength Of Athletes With Disabilities

It was the Polish-American novelist, Jerzy Konsinski, who wrote that the principle of true art is not to portray but to evoke.

This is particularly evident in the work of Nigerian creative photographer, August Udoh, who constantly captures his human subjects in different powerful and thought-provoking situations.

In a bid to get us talking about one issue we constantly overlook in sports in Nigeria, Udoh – who also happened to take those striking images of Dambe fighters – has put together a powerful photo series about athletes with disabilities.

Udoh, in his usual style, casts the athletes in somber backgrounds, conveying a sense of seriousness around them.

They all appear in their gear – some with ‘Nigeria’ boldly inscribed on them – and are obviously determined to live above their physical disabilities in a country that hardly recognizes them. These powerful images are sure to stick with you long after you’ve looked away.
