Discover Nigerian Architectural History With The Upcoming ‘Waka Tour’

Nigerians often forget how rich our history is because media and pop culture are very eurocentric. Young Nigerians often learn about other cultures and traditions before theirs. Kelechi Anabaraonye is looking to change that. Kelechi is a political science major at the University of Lagos with a penchant for colonial history especially colonial structures.

It started in 2014, when he took a causal stroll around Lagos Island and took some pictures of the buildings in the streets with his iPhone 5. After that, he converted his Instagram page into a digital museum. It went from a hobby to a passion.

Kelechi started the Waka Tour in February earlier this year, as a bid to get more Nigerians interested in their history. Speaking with us, he said:

“I started the Waka Tour because many young Nigerians lack enthusiasm about their history. Their parents aren’t really passing down the knowledge. Most of what they know is the civil war and coups and I’d like to help change that.”

Now, the second edition is around the corner. With this edition, the group will be touring 25 structures around Lagos Island. Three will be residential, seven will be cathedrals and the rest will be government buildings. They’ll be able to take pictures and will be given in depth facts about the history and culture of the buildings.
