Adenike Akinsemolu Is Saving Our Environment One University Campus At A Time

While discussing environmental rights with her students, Adenike Akinsemolu, a lecturer at Adeyemi College, was shocked by how ignorant her otherwise intelligent students were about issues of climate change and environmental sustainability.

As an avid environmental rights advocate, Adenike saw this an opportunity to educate her students and students on other campuses across the country; and that’s how The Green Campus Initiative (GCI) was formed.

The GCI is the first campus-based environmental advocacy organization in Nigeria. It tackles the challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability through academic research, green initiatives and socially-conscious student leaders.

They train university students and equip them with the tools needed to create ‘green initiatives’ on their own campuses. About why these initiatives are so important in Nigeria, Adenike said on her website:

“For a nation like Nigeria, environmental degradation is status quo. In many ways, destroying the environment has been part of our economic development strategy – especially given our historical dependence on natural resources such as oil and timber.”

Just in the first 8 months of their journey, nearly 150 university students from 28 universities were trained with the goal to have a chapter of the Green Campus Initiative at each of Nigeria’s university campuses – and Adenike isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
