FIFA Confirms 9 World Cup Slots For Africa
Following FIFA‘s resolution to increase the number of teams at the World Cup from 32 to 48, two months ago, the Bureau of the FIFA Council has finally listened to African football associations and recommended 9 slots for Africa.
While we rejoiced, it was half-hearted because their recommendation was subject to approval by the FIFA Council. Now, at the meeting which held yesterday in Manama, Bahrain, the Council has finally approved the Bureau’s recommendation, and Africa can now boldly boast of an additional four direct slots in the World Cup. Guaranteed!

FIFA has released a statement on its website confirming this exciting development. According to the statement, the Council also approved 8 direct slots for Asia, 6 for North and Central America, 6 for South America, 16 for Europe, and 1 for Oceania.
In addition, the remaining two slots in the tournament will be decided by an intercontinental playoff involving six teams – which means that Africa just might get a 10th slot!
Honestly, we just can’t wait to bring the trophy home in 2026 when this new arrangement will take effect.
