7 Healthy Nigerian Foods That Will Aid In Your Weight Loss Journey

Healthy food isn’t always salad.

When it comes to weight loss, most people assume healthy food has to be a salad, veggies or even fruits. This is why many Nigerians find it hard to eat healthier and shed some weight.

If you have weight loss on your mind, getting your portion size right as well as your diet goes a long way. While fruits, veggies and salads are good for weight loss, you can’t eat them every day. Here are some delicious healthy Nigerian foods to help you out:

1. Unripe plantain

Unripe plantain is rich in iron and complex sugars. It keeps you filled for longer. You can pair this with fish sauce or chicken sauce.

2. Moi Moi

Do you know you can make moi moi without adding oil? Just the pepper and seasonings. You can add boiled fish and hard boiled eggs to make your moi moi richer.

3. Beans porridge

Everyone eats beans in this form. It is healthy and can be spiced up by adding some fish, corn, potatoes and even plantain. Porridge beans can be made in as many creative forms as you can think of.

4. Pepper soup

Almost every Nigerian loves pepper soup. And it’s not just a great bar food. It’s a filling dish you can add to your diet while trying to lose weight. You can use chevon (goat meat), beef, chicken, turkey etc; veggies like carrots and more to enrich it.

5. Couscous

Many people in southern Nigeria may not be familiar with couscous like our northern brethren. But it’s high time we started incorporating couscous into our meals to break the monotony of rice. And it is healthier than the regular rice we chow down on every Sunday.

6. Fonio

Fonio is another grain from the north that has the fitfam gang in the south here in a tizzy. Healthier than rice, packed with fibre and just as versatile, you can’t go wrong with eating this.

7. Vegetable soup

When it comes to vegetable soup, Nigeria is blessed. Afang, Edikang Ikong, Efo riro and other Naija delicacies that are heavy on veggies should make it into your weekly diet. Skip the semo and go for a bit of whole wheat meal for a more filling meal.
