Wizkid: ‘Come Closer’ slides into Billboard chart as Drake, D’banj show love

Wizkid’s latest collaboration with Drake is the number one trending song on VEVO, where it has already been watched over 1.2 million times.

In fact, the video hosting service has recommended the song to its subscribers.

In his almost 8-year career, this is the fastest time it has taken Wizkid to get such buzz around a song.

Although fans were disappointed that Drake did not feature in the video for ‘Come Closer‘, the singer posted a now-deleted tweet where he explained that the Canadian rapper was on tour when the video was being shot.

Wizkid’s fans were even more vexed that Drake failed to promote the song on any of his social media platforms since it was released over a week ago.

But the rapper/singer did the needful on Friday.

“Congrats to my g @wizkidayo new song and video out now!!! Madness,” he wrote on Instagram.

Drake’s absence in the video, whether deliberate or truly accidental, sparked comparisons between Wizkid and D’banj, the last Nigerian singer to have a major international hit song and huge following.

D’banj, in his prime, collaborated with Snoop Dogg and Kanye West – and both artistes featured in his videos.

Fans of both singers dug up statistics and their achievements in a bid to determine who’s “bigger”, “better” and “more successful”.

But Wizkid wasn’t ready to be party to the “disrespect”.

He even called out MTV Base for putting up a poll on the topic.

“So disappointed in y’all for bringing this up. After everything king Dbanj done in the game?!! Pls show respect,” he tweeted.

MTV Base immediately deleted the tweet.

Subsequently, D’banj slid into the discourse but chose to congratulate Wizkid and appreciate the efforts of the original Starboy.

“I’m so proud of you @wizkidayo ! Africa to the World!!! This is why we took the Leap,” he wrote.

Wizkid responded by reminding his fans that D’banj “started” the international movement while describing him as the “king”.

In the midst of all the debate and raging furore over Drake, D’banj and Wizkid, the song which ignited the discourse was slowly soaring up the charts.

‘Come Closer’ is currently number 13 on Billboard’s ‘Twitter Top Tracks’ chart.
