10 Things Nigerian Women Are Tired Of Hearing
Being a Nigerian woman is one of the most stressful things ever.
When you’re not trying to hustle and succeed, you’re trying to navigate the intricate double standards that govern life. On International Women’s Day, many Nigerians pay lip service to issues affecting women without bothering to do their part in fixing things.
If you want to fix things, start by not saying these things because Nigerian women are tired of hearing them:
1. Why are you single?
Marriage shaming is a big problem in Nigeria. Please, a woman’s life isn’t an audition to be a man’s wife. Stop single shaming our unmarried women.

2. Eiss, eiss, fine girl
Nigerian women are tired of being whistled at like they’re dogs. If you want to approach someone, walking up to them and saying “hi” or “hello” is the norm not “eiss, eiss fine girl”.

3. Why are you this fat/thin?
Nigerians will fat shame a chubby woman and thin-shame a thin one. Women can’t just win with you guys. If Naija women are chubby, wahala. If they’re thin, wahala.

4. Is that how you’d behave in your husband’s house?
Growing up, every Nigerian girl heard this in one form or the other. Women shouldn’t be groomed to only aspire to marriage. Women can achieve so much more when you don’t indoctrinate them to take marriage as the ultimate achievement in life.

5. Can you even cook?
Cooking is a skill that everyone should learn. Cooking for only women. Like this guy aptly puts it:

6. You’ll soon be alone without any man
Once you tell a Naija man no, next thing is “you will be alone without any man”. Please when someone says no, respect their choice and don’t be petty.

7. What are you wearing?
Our Naija brothers need another line when we’re chatting. And generally, people need to stop policing whatever women wear.

8. You’re too proud
The double standard really pisses many women off. A woman is too proud but a man is confident. Nigerian women are not proud, just confident.

9. No one will marry a girl/woman like you
Apparently, Nigerians must be oracles that can predict the future because we don’t know how they can make such sweeping statements.

10. Your makeup is too much
What a person wears is none of your business. Policing women’s bodies is not your purpose on earth. Naija women are so tired of everyone commenting on our makeup, hair, clothes, shoes etc.
